Activities

Thanks to our great location "in-the-park" our guests have easy access to the many programs offered by Bryce Canyon National Park.

Park rangers and volunteers conduct interpretive activities including hikes, rim walks, geology talks, moonlight hikes, astronomy programs and slideshows from late spring through early fall. Topics vary and include plants, animals, geology, archeology, human history, and much more. Schedules for summer interpretive programs will be posted in early May at the Bryce Canyon National Park website, the park visitor center and Bryce Canyon Lodge. All Ranger-Led activities and programs are free.

Special Programs

Programs offered by the Park Service include:

Just For Kids - Join a ranger for games and activities on ecology and Bryce Canyon. One hour. Reservations required. Visit the For Kids & Families section of this site for more information.

Junior Ranger Programs - These programs offer children the opportunity to learn more about the park! Kids can ask for a free Junior Ranger Activity Guide at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center. To complete a number of activities in the book and receive a Junior Ranger Badge children will need to attend at least one ranger program. Once all the requirements are met kids can receive their very own Junior Ranger Badge and Certificate. Approximately half a day.

Moonlight Hike - Hike among moonlit hoodoos. Sign-up (in person) is required. 320 ft/98 m elevation change; Two hours. Offered three times each month during the full moon.

Night Skies at Bryce - Learn the stars, planets and constellations. 1 hour.

Star Party - Join an astronomer from Hansen Planetarium and view the sky through telescopes. Two hours. Offered once each month.

Talk and Evening Geology Programs

Geology Talk - Rangers tell the geologic story of Bryce Canyon. 30 minutes.

Lodge Patio Talk - Relax and learn about natural or cultural history. 30 minutes.

Campfire/Auditorium Program - Bryce Canyon's diversity comes to life during the slide program or evening talk at the campground amphitheaters or Bryce Lodge auditorium. 45 minutes.

Canyon Trail Rides

Another very popular activity is Horseback Riding. In spring, summer and fall, Canyon Trail Rides wranglers lead 2-hour and half-day horse and mule rides into Bryce Amphitheater along a dedicated horse trail and the Peekaboo Loop Trail. The trail ride desk is located right in our lobby!

For more information, visit the Canyon Trail Rides website. For reservations, write or call Canyon Trail Rides, P.O. Box 128, Tropic, UT 84776, 435.679.8665 or 435.834.5500.

Picnicking

A Picnic is a great way to spend the day! The lodge offers boxed lunches in advance for your picnic that you can order from the dining room, front desk or by dialing 760 from your room. Picnic tables, water and restrooms are available at Sunset Point and Yovimpa Point. The south end of the North Campground has picnic tables, water and fire grates. Restrooms are available in the nearby Loop D or N. Campground.

Bicycling

Biking around the park to view the beauty is an activity many of our visitors enjoy. Within Bryce Canyon National Park, bicycles are restricted to paved roads only and are not allowed on trails or off road to ensure our environment stays intact. Bicycle rentals are available at Ruby's Inn north of the park. Information on mountain biking opportunities outside the park may be obtained by calling the Garfield County Travel Council at 1.800.444.6689 or visit their Web site.

Hiking Trails

Bryce Canyon National Park offers more than 50 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to expert. For a detailed list of trails and descriptions, please refer to the Bryce Canyon Hoodoo, which is the park newspaper and guide. It should be given to you upon entrance to the park. Our Front Desk also has additional copies and Bryce Canyon Maps. For further information on backcountry hiking and permits you may stop by the Park Visitor Center or visit the Bryce Canyon National Park Web site.

Shuttle System

The Bryce Canyon Shuttle operates from spring to early fall. Private cars are permitted throughout the park, but we encourage the use of the shuttles to reduce traffic, conserve fuel and protect park resources.

Boarding the shuttle from outside the park requires a shuttle ticket or park pass; however, riding the shuttle within the park is free. You can get on and off as often as you like to take pictures, hike trails and enjoy the views.

Current shuttle schedules are posted at each shuttle stop, the Bryce Lodge Lobby, Bryce Canyon Visitor Center, inside the Bryce Canyon Hoodoo park newspaper or on the radio at AM 1610 (only within the park). You may also view Bryce Shuttle information on the National Park Web site.
